More cruise ships in Corfu in 2025 - the port's contribution to the local economy

At the same time, May, June, and July are the most productive months in the cruise industry. In May and June, 130 cruise ships are expected, while in July and August another 120, with all that this entails for the local economy of the island.

The positive impact of the Port of Corfu on the local economy and employment

In the meantime, yesterday, the study "Assessment of the social and economic impacts of the Port of Corfu", implemented by MaGBid, a spin-off of the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH), under the scientific supervision of Professor Mr. Dimitris Dimitriou, was published.

In summary, according to the results of the study, the total economic contribution from the operation of the port and cruise activity for the period 2023-2024 amounts to 193 million. euros, while the employment support reaches 1,750 jobs, underlining the strategic importance of the port's services to the local and national economy.

The cruise activity has highlighted the Port of Corfu as one of the most dynamic hubs in the Mediterranean, with a total economic impact of 180.8 million euros, of which the direct costs, which include passenger and port services costs, amount to 72.3 million euros, the indirect effects, from supplies and support services, are estimated at 43.4 million euros, as the multiplier effects, which come from the consumption of income, reach 65.1 million euros, while in terms of jobs, the cruise supported a total of 1,545 jobs.

Transit passengers, who make up 70.8% of the total (472,390 passengers), had an average spend of 48 to 52 euros. Although their shorter length of stay limits the spend per passenger, their high volume creates a significant overall impact of 23.6 million euros. The particular importance of Homeporting is reflected in the greater financial contribution per passenger. Home In and Home Out passengers, who represent 29.2% of the total (194,792 passengers), spent a total of 48.7 million euros on activities such as accommodation, meals, transport, and local attractions.

In conclusion, the operation of the Port of Corfu contributed a total of 12.3 million euros to the local economy, of which 4.68 million euros came from direct activities, such as port fees, leases, and commercial activities, 3.05 million euros from indirect impacts related to operational support costs and supplies, and 4.6 million euros from multiplier effects. Furthermore, the port's activities are linked to over 200 jobs in Corfu, confirming its role as an important economic pillar.
