Turbulence in Milan's air map - KLM withdraws from Malpensa airport

Air traffic in Milan is entering a new phase of reorganization, with Linate steadily gaining ground over Malpensa.

The recent extension of the M4 metro to Linate Airport has further enhanced its popularity, establishing it as the preferred option for Milanese travelers. Despite the existence of a train that connects Malpensa with Cadorna and Centrale stations in about 30 minutes, for many, Malpensa remains a remote and less accessible airport.

Following the general trend of restructuring, KLM announced its definitive withdrawal from Malpensa airport, concentrating all its activities at Linate. From 30 March 2025, all KLM flights from Milan to its Amsterdam hub (Schiphol) will be operated exclusively from Linate, with five daily departures (6.40, 11.00, 13.00, 16.50, and 19.40).

The impact of the ITA Airways-Lufthansa merger

KLM's withdrawal from Malpensa is also linked to the developments surrounding the merger of ITA Airways with Lufthansa. In accordance with the guidelines of the European Competition Commission, ITA and Lufthansa were obliged to release fifteen slots at Linate in order to increase competition.

The beneficiaries of these slots were:

EasyJet: Five pairs of slots, to be used for flights to Brussels, Frankfurt, and Vienna.
Air France/KLM: Two pairs of slots, one for Air France and one for KLM, allowing the Dutch carrier to transfer its last flight from Malpensa to Linate.

Air France and its dual presence

Unlike KLM, Air France will continue to serve both Milan airports. The French airline will increase its daily flights between Milan and Paris (Charles De Gaulle) from 9 to 10, adding a new departure from Linate at 12.20.

In conclusion, KLM's strategy reflects the shift of air traffic towards Linate, which is becoming increasingly accessible and preferred by airlines and passengers. At the same time, the reorganisation of slots at the airport strengthens competition and reshapes the international air transport landscape in Milan.
