Increased road safety measures during the three-day period of Carnival and Ash Monday

The Hellenic Police, in view of the celebration of Carnival and Ash Monday, is taking, from Friday, February 28, 2025 to Monday, March 3, 2025, increased traffic police measures throughout the country's road network, with the aim of ensuring the safe movement of citizens and preventing and averting traffic accidents.

The planning was carried out based on the Strategic Planning of the Hellenic Police Headquarters for the full and continuous activation of all Traffic Services and includes:

• increased police presence and reinforced policing of points on the road network where traffic accidents are frequent,
• increased police measures at the entrances and exits of large urban centers where heavy vehicle traffic is observed,
• increased police measures in areas where mass passenger traffic is observed (airports, ports, stations, etc.),
• development of measures and special actions within cities, as well as in points where increased traffic of road users is observed due to festive events,
• promptly ensuring cooperation and direct communication with all co-competent Bodies - Services around the clock, for the immediate response and resolution of any problems that arise and
• Informing citizens through the competent Communication Services of the Corps, in any case where it becomes necessary to widely inform the public about the existence of any traffic and other problems.

At the same time, through planning, particular emphasis is placed on the establishment of special traffic control teams at alternating points on the road network, focusing, among other things, on the verification of dangerous violations, as well as violations that, based on statistical data, are responsible for causing serious traffic accidents, such as:

• driving under the influence of alcohol,
• excessive speeding,
• using a mobile phone while driving,
• not using a protective helmet - seat belt,
• illegal overtaking and crossing double dividing lines, etc.,
• not using special means of restraint and protection, such as seats, seat belts, etc., when
• transporting children in vehicles,
• driving vehicles by minors and persons who do not have a driving license,
• driving to demonstrate ability,
• circulation of vehicles that have not undergone a regular or extraordinary technical inspection within the specified deadline,
  worn tires and
• Irregular vehicle movement in the Emergency Lane (ELA).

Throughout the implementation of the measures, both the personnel and the means of the Hellenic Police, mainly the Traffic Police Services, will be in increased operational readiness. Specifically, patrol cars, motorcycles, and conventional vehicles will be made available, with the appropriate personnel and equipment for the effective policing of the country's road network.

It is noted that during the festive period, the movement bans of trucks with a maximum permitted weight of over 3.5 tons will apply.
