The most treacherous roads in the world - one in Greece

Everyone is probably familiar with the saying ‘All roads lead to Rome’. Well if the roads are anything like the ones in this list, it is doubtful whether anyone would risk their lives making the journey…Here is a list of ten of the most treacherous roads in the world. No matter much of a good and careful driver you think you are, it would be a good idea to steer clear (pardon the pun) of these ‘death traps’…

The Stelvio Pass

Located in the northern Italian Alps, this road is the highest paved mountain pass in the area and the second highest in the Alps. The pass is situated around 200 miles from the Swiss border.

The Trans Siberian Highway

This one comes from Russia ‘with love’… The “highway” is one of the most dangerous in the world, not only because of its length and unpredictability, but also due to the fact that it is set in deep woodlands, mountain ranges and deserts. It is one of the longest highways in the world and connects the Russian cities of Vladivostok and St. Petersburg.

Highway One In Mexico

Mexico’s Highway One starts at the border city of Tijuana and continues to the south to Maneadero, passing Portolas march all the way from Loreto to San Diego. Possibly the most dangerous leg of this one is the 109 km stretch from Tijuana to Ensenada which includes a toll road and is more than a little difficult to navigate.

Cotopaxi Volcano Road

The Cotopaxi Volcano Road is a treacherous place to drive, even if you are the slowest driver in the world…. Found in the Latacunga canyon of Cotopaxi Province, Ecuador, the road is the second highest point in the country, reaching an incredible 6,000 meters in some places. The road is long and extremely narrow in some places, forcing drivers to be on high alert when turning risky curves.

The Patiopoulo-Perdikaki Road

Greece could’t be left out of the list. The Perdikaki-Patiopoulo mountain road definitely deserves a spot in todays gallery. Measuring 23,5 km in length, the road is located in the north of Greece and has seen more than a fatal accident or two in its time. This road has some very challenging twists and turns and consists of either steep climbs or dangerous descents, with little road grip to speak of. We do not recommend you attempt this road if you are visiting Greece its not a fun drive to say the least.

The Infamous A44

Even though this is an A road and not a highway, strictly speaking, the A44 is well-known to the drivers of Britain as a dangerous stretch to commute on, while it runs from Oxford to Aberystwyth. Due to the way it was built, the A44 has seen more accidents, usually by head-on collisions, than any other in the UK.

The Sichuan-Tibet Highway

The Sichuan-Tibet Highway, located in China, is a huge road, if you can even call it a “road.” The highway runs for a treacherous 2,142 km and strides vast landscapes rising to huge peaks in some parts. To travel the road in its entirety would take roughly 15 full days and landslides on the road are commonplace. The highway also spans numerous well-known rivers including the Jinsha River, Lantsang River, and the Nujiang.
The A682 Road

We’re back in the UK once again for the A682 which is a 14 mile stretch of road, well-known to the brits for being extremely dangerous, no matter what you’re driving or the prevalent driving conditions. Running from Lancashire to North Yorkshire, the A682 is considered to be Britain’s most dangerous road, as more than 100 lives have been claimed on it in the past decade.

The Halsema Highway

The Halsema Highway is located in the Philippines and is an infamously dangerous road, known by many to be one to avoid, if possible. At its highest peak, the road reaches 2,255 metres above sea level and this makes the sheer altitude of the highway a challenge in itself. Also known as the Baguio-Bontoc Road or the Mountain Trail, its worth avoiding this dangerous highway if you can, and seek alternative routes.
