Greek tourism: More than 126,000 homes and properties rented by Airbnb

More than 126,000 short-term rentals were listed on Airbnb's rental platform throughout all 13 regions of Greece in June, compared with nearly 96,000 in 2017, 57,000 in 2016, 26,500 in 2015, 12,000 in 2014, 5,400 in 2013 and only 132 in 2010.

This explosive growth in the number of Greek properties being leased out as accommodation was recorded in a study published in the latest issue of the Economic Developments magazine published by the Center of Planning and Economic Research (KEPE)

According to the respective data, only in Attica in June 2018 there were more than 30,000 listings compared to nearly 26,000 in South Aegean and 22,000 in Crete.

These three regions account for more than 60% of all Airbnb listings in Greece ranging from 76.5% in 2012 to 61.6% in 2018.

There are three other regions, Central Macedonia, the Ionian Islands and the Peloponnese, that account for 26.3 percent of all listings in 2018 compared to 13.9 percent in 2011

At the end of the first half of 2018, there were more than 5,000 short-term rentals in each of the six abovementioned Regions (ranging from 6,474 in the Peloponnese to 30,184 in Attica) and accounting for 87.9% of the whole sector.

The remaining seven regions ranked considerably lower as the number of listings that were active at the end of the first half of 2018, amounted to a mere 12.1% of the total, while their accommodation ranged from 196 in western Macedonia to 3,880 in Thessaly.

Specifically in the Region of Attica, central Athens accounts for 53.3% of the total listings followed by Eastern Attica with 19.3%, Saronikos Gulf with 20.3%, Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni southern suburbs with 19.8% and the Markopoulo-Mesogaia areas with 9.8%. 

Southern Attica attracts 11.0 percent of the total activity with the southern suburbs of Glyfada at 25.2%, Paleo Faliro at 18.2% and Kallithea at 16%.

Finally, KEPE also notes that Greek owners use TripAdvisor, Booking.com, HomeAway, HouseTrip, Flipkey, 9Flats, Roomorama, trivago and StayInAthens for placing their listings as well as EazyBnb, GuestEasy, and Airbnb management for support services.
