Sfakia | In the global spotlight of thematic tourism for the solar eclipse of 2027

Sfakia is on the path of international visibility, attracting the interest of important experience tourism and thematic travel agencies with a view to the upcoming total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027.

This particular eclipse is considered one of the most impressive of the 21st century, with a maximum totality duration of more than 6 minutes. South Crete – and especially the Sfakia region – will be within the zone of totality, with coverage of the Sun that will range between 86% and 88% of the visibility of the phenomenon. From Sfakia, visitors will be able to observe the phenomenon in all its glory: the Sun “going out”, the celestial crown shining, the day temporarily turning into night, offering a unique life experience.

The high quality of the natural environment, the low light pollution and the traditional land of Sfakia make the area ideal for stargazing and high-quality thematic tourism.

In the context of this global conjuncture, the Sfakia City Hall was visited by Ms. Maria Christina Baklava, Country Manager Greece, of the American thematic tourism company “Thalassa Journeys”, which specializes in experience trips for alumni associations of the most famous Universities, combining education with culture and sustainable practices. It is noteworthy that the founders of the company are the pioneers of the thematic cruise, the brothers George and Vasos Papagapitos, who live permanently and have been active in the USA for many years.

Mrs. Baklava was accompanied by George Manousakis, head of networking and extroversion of the Mediterranean Agri-Food and Skills Center (MACC), with an active role in connecting the region with international networks of quality tourism and gastronomy through its active corporate members.

During the constructive meeting with the Mayor of Sfakion, Ioannis Zervos, as well as with Deputy Mayors and associates of the Municipality of Sfakion, the region's potential for the development of thematic forms of tourism was presented. The following were particularly discussed:
- Hiking and exploring the imposing gorges of Sfakia (Samaria, Imbros, Aradena),
- The life of the Sfakians and the possibility of experiential participation in activities such as cheesemaking, beekeeping, and traditional gastronomy,
- The need to preserve the authentic character of the place, against over-tourism exploitation.

Mrs. Baklava declared herself enthusiastic about the region, emphasizing: “Sfakia is a raw diamond that deserves to be highlighted in a way that will reveal its unique potential, but at the same time be protected from any form of abuse of its natural beauty. The eclipse is only the beginning – the opportunity is to build a quality and sustainable
experience around it.”

The Mayor of Sfakion, Mr. Zervos, emphasized the Municipality's intention to support thematic tourism actions of high added value, which strengthen the local economy with respect for the environment and cultural heritage.

The Municipality, in collaboration with national and international bodies, is proceeding with the organization of infrastructure (School of Astronomy), promotion of the area and planning of experiences that will culminate during the eclipse period, but will also leave a long-term imprint on the tourist identity of Sfakion.
