The Virgin Mary of Lipsi with the dried lilies in bloom | Great celebration and three-day festival on August 23

In most places in Greece, the 15th of August is the peak moment of worship of the Virgin Mary. In Lipsi, however, the great celebration comes a few days later – on August 23, during the Novena of the Virgin Mary. There, tradition, faith and a unique miracle come together in a three-day festival that is the most important event on the island.

The celebration is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Grace, with the miraculous icon depicting the Virgin Mary holding the Crucified Christ in her arms – a rare iconography that inspires awe. The most impressive, however, is the inexplicable miracle of the dried lilies that adorn the icon: placed fresh on March 25, they wither and, a few days before the celebration, bloom again.

The events begin on the evening of the eve, August 22, from the island's cathedral - built in 1931 at the expense of the Lipsot Brotherhood of America. At six in the afternoon, the icon with the blooming lilies is taken out in procession: the philharmonic orchestra leads, followed by the clergy, the mayor, the members of the City Council and a multitude of pilgrims who flood the streets.

The festival lasts three days, with offerings of grapes and sweets to visitors, while on the day of the Nine Days, traditional bread with mastic, anise and nutmeg from a wood-fired oven is distributed, along with local meat. Every year, pilgrims from Patmos, Leros and the surrounding islands arrive in Lipsi, transforming the island into a vibrant sea of faith and culture.

In a statement, the mayor of Lipsi, Fotis Maggos, points out to Tornos News:

The largest festival on the island is that of Panagia tou Charou with the celebrations starting on August 22 in the afternoon and lasting three days.
