A new era for hiking tourism in Greece is inaugurated by the Cooperative Society Paths of Greece, presenting the ambitious and innovative “Greek Islands Trail” — an interconnected network of hiking routes that unites the Cyclades with a natural and cultural thread, proposing a new, experiential approach to exploring the Greek islands.

The project concerns a network of trails that extends across many of the most emblematic islands of the Cyclades, such as Naxos, Amorgos, Sifnos and Tinos. Its aim is to offer travelers an authentic, sustainable and deep experience of connection with nature, culture and local communities, through the activity of hiking.

More than a trail – a lifetime experience

As Paths of Greece founder Phoebus Tsaravopoulos explains, the Greek Islands Trail (GIT) is not a strictly defined route, but an idea: an invitation to explore and spend several days on each island, with the aim of getting to know the place better. The network of trails connects natural, historical and cultural landmarks, from ancient paths and hidden coves to traditional villages and Venetian castles, emphasizing the authentic character of each island.

“The Greek Islands Trail was born from a deep love for the Cyclades and the desire to share the magic of this unique landscape in a sustainable and immersive way,” says Tsaravopoulos. “We are creating a network that not only showcases the natural beauty of the islands but also strengthens local economies, promoting responsible, four-month and, ideally, twelve-month tourism.”

Infrastructure, partnerships, and digital support

The implementation of the Greek Islands Trail was made possible thanks to a wide range of synergies. The contribution of the Cycladic Identity program of the Museum of Cycladic Art, which supported the effort financially and institutionally, was decisive, while a significant part of the project was also financed by Paths of Greece’s own resources. At the same time, the South Aegean Region and local bodies on each island contributed substantially to the recording, restoration and marking of the routes.

The project is digitally supported by the specially designed website www.greekislandstrail.gr, which functions as a complete planning guide for hikers. It includes detailed maps, technical characteristics of the trails, information on points of interest, as well as contacts with local trail management bodies.

Main features of the Greek Islands Trail:

Authentic experiences: Walk on ancient cobblestone streets, discover hidden beaches and experience everyday life in white Cycladic villages.
Cultural immersion: The trails pass through historical monuments, prehistoric settlements, Byzantine churches and fortress complexes.
Island hopping on foot: The proposal encourages movement from island to island, with each island offering a unique hiking experience.
Sustainable tourism: The network is designed to minimize the environmental footprint, attracting visitors outside the high season and strengthening local businesses.

A call to the international hiking community

The Greek Islands Trail is not just a tourist proposal. It is a vision for the future of island tourism, embodying the concepts of sustainability, locality, and authentic experience. Its creators invite the international community of hikers, nature lovers, and travelers to experience the Cyclades from the inside – not just as a destination, but as a living, evolving cultural landscape.

“We are excited to share this new journey with the world and look forward to seeing hikers discover the true soul of these magnificent islands,” notes Mr. Tsaravopoulos.

Paths of Greece is a social cooperative enterprise with a mission to establish Greece as a leading global hiking destination. With projects across the country, it designs and promotes trails that serve sustainable development and cultural preservation.
