Zygaktis Trail: Mountain races in Kefalari, Drama, with a backdrop of myth and nature

On May 25, the 5th edition of the Zygaktis River Zygaktis Trail mountain races is scheduled to take place, as well as the 3rd edition of the Zygaktis Kids children's races, in Kefalari, Drama. The popular sporting event is becoming an institution for the region, attracting a large number of athletes and visitors from Macedonia and beyond every year.

It is noted that the event is being held for the fifth year by the Environmental Sports Association of the Municipality of Doxatos "PERI.FI.SY.", with the support of the Municipality of Drama.

The routes include three categories:

• 26 km, which initially follows the “Water Route” and then crosses the Lekanis Mountains
• 6 km, next to the Zygaktis River
• 1 km children’s race, also next to the river

The start and finish of all races take place at the Kefalari Community Center.

In addition to the athletic experience, participants have the opportunity to get to know a place that bears a strong mythological and natural imprint. The Zygaktis River, according to tradition, took its name from the word “zygizo”, as it balances, according to the ancients, between the Upper and Lower Worlds. The myth has Pluto’s chariot rushing across its waters, leading Persephone to Hades, while the river tries in vain to stop its course, dissolving the chariot’s wheels.

Today, Zygaktis offers a completely different experience: an impressive natural landscape with lush vegetation, small waterfalls, and stone points of interest. The race routes pass through shady ravines and wooded slopes, offering a unique setting for sporting activity in nature.

Beyond participating in the races, Kefalari is an ideal destination for a full-day or multi-day excursion. The area combines the tranquility of nature with cultural interest, while visitors can enjoy local flavors in traditional taverns, walk on paths next to the river, or explore the natural landscapes that surround the village.
