80-bed mountain refuge legalized in Kalavryta

The V. Leontopoulos mountain refuge, located at Diaselo Avgou on Mount Chelmos in Kalavryta, is legalized.

According to a decision of the Special Service for the Promotion and Licensing of Tourism Investments of the Ministry of Tourism, the legalization is carried out with the aim of serving hiking, mountaineering, climbing, and general mountain tourism activities and is located at a key point to the Kalavryta ski resort and the telescope of the National Observatory of Athens named Aristarchos, which is located on the Neraidorachi peak of Chelmos at an altitude of 2,340 meters.

After the issuance of the declaratory act, the beneficiary is obliged to apply for the issuance of a joint Ministerial decision to legalize the mountain refuge, which will specify the conditions regarding the intervention carried out and the obligations of the beneficiaries after this intervention, the beneficiary must submit a complete file of supporting documents to the Special Service for the Promotion and Licensing of Tourist Investments.

What is the mountain refuge V. Leontopoulos

The mountain refuge Diaselo Avgou of Mount Chelmos in Kalavryta, is located at an altitude of 2,089 m. and has a capacity of 80 beds. It was built in 1932 and in 2002 the original building was restored with the construction of a new refuge by the Greek National Tourism Organization. The area of ​​5,000 sq.m. in which the refuge is located, is part of the High Peaks of Mount Helmos Nature Conservation Area of ​​the Helmos - Vouraikos National Park.

The refuge is developed and operates on three above-ground floors - levels and a basement with a central staircase, and a large paved terrace around the perimeter of the building, it has 80 beds in single spaces, an organized kitchen, a restaurant, a rest and recreation area, showers and WC.

The location of the refuge serves the ascent through a network of trails with the main route being the E4 and the route Kalavryta - Ski Center - Neraidorachi - P. Koriphi - Mavrolimni - Stygos Waters - Peristera - Tsivlos - I.M. Spilaio. Access to the mountain refuge is via mountain trails of particular natural and historical beauty. Also, apart from the paths and at a distance of approximately 200 m. from the shelter, there is a forest dirt road to the Aristarchos observatory.

The shelter in question has been built without a legal building permit.
