German tourism: Holidays above inflation

• Despite inflation and pressure on family budgets, travel remains a priority for Germans. According to a representative survey of 2,000 German travelers by WeLoveHolidays, only 7% intend to reduce their holiday spending in 2025. On the contrary, almost one in three (31%) plan to travel more than in previous years.

In more detail, 21% plan to travel further or more often, while 10% are willing to increase their budget for a more luxurious experience.

Travel starts with a budget – but it usually goes beyond

Although most travelers start with a plan, in practice, the costs often exceed the initial estimates. 56% of respondents admit that they spent more than they had planned in 2024, while 11% doubled their budget. Only 12% managed to stay within limits.

The average daily holiday budget declared by Germans is 43 euros. However, the amounts vary significantly: 17% reported daily expenses of 40–60 euros, 15% are in the range of 80–100 euros, while 14% state 20–40 euros per day. It is noteworthy that 18% intend to spend more than 100 euros per day, while 10% state that they do not set any limits on their budget.

What do Germans spend their money on?

The experience is what is sought after when it comes to holidays. More than a third of respondents (36%) prefer to spend on fine dining and drinking, while 20% are willing to pay for a relaxing day at the spa.

Special experiences, such as VIP tours or special activities, are preferred by 11% of respondents, while 10% seek adventure with activities such as skiing, diving, or climbing. Souvenirs still have their place, with 10% considering them essential.

How Germans save money in 2025

Despite higher prices, Germans are finding ways to save money without depriving themselves of the pleasure of their holidays. Four are the dominant strategies:

• 26% choose to travel outside the peak season, avoiding crowds and high prices.
• 23% book early to get better prices.
• 13% prefer to be flexible with dates to find cheaper flights and accommodations.
• 11% choose their destination based on cost rather than a specific country.

The picture that emerges is clear: Germans continue to invest in travel experiences, even if that means making concessions or finding creative solutions to their planning.
