On the basis of the results of the Passengers Survey, arrivals of tourists reached 98.924 in December 2017 compared to 87.927 in December 2016, recording an increase of 12,5%. December 2017 had the highest volume of tourist arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the specific month.
For the period of January – December 2017 arrivals of tourists totaled 3.652.073 compared to 3.186.531 in the corresponding period of 2016, recording an increase of 14,6% and outnumbering the total arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during a year.
Analysis of changes
Tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom increased by 8,0% in December 2017 compared to December 2016 while an increase of 6,9% was recorded for tourists from Greece. A minor increase was recorded from Russia (1,0%) while an increase of 38,7% was recorded from Israel. Furthermore, a slight decrease of 1,4% was recorded in tourist arrivals from Lebanon.
Main countries
The United Kingdom and Greece constitute the main sources of tourism for Cyprus for December 2017, with proportions of 28,5% and 14,1% respectively, while arrivals from Russia comprise 12,4% and from Israel 10,2% of total arrivals.
Characteristics of tourists
For a percentage of 51,4% of tourists, the purpose of their trip in December 2017 was holidays, for 36,2% visit to friends and relatives and for 12,4% business.
Men comprise 46,7% of tourists and women 53,3%, whilst most of the tourists belonged to the age group of 20-44 years.
