Which airport hotels in Europe offer value, and what… they just cost

An unexpected cancellation, a delay, or a lost flight response can easily lead to a night at the airport - or, more specifically, to a nearby hotel. But is the cost is finally worth it? A new Holidaycheck study that examined 135 hotels in 30 of Europe's busiest airports gives a clear picture of differences in quality, price, and experience.

Airport hotels, with an average rating of 4.91 out of 6 stars, seem to be removed from the old image of "lifeless waiting areas". However, quality and prices vary significantly from region to region, decisively affecting the value that the traveler ultimately enjoys.

Eastern Europe: High satisfaction at low prices

For travelers who prioritize the economy without sacrificing quality, Eastern Europe offers some of the most affordable choices. Warsaw stands out with 5.1 stars and just € 98 per night, followed by Bucharest (4.8 stars, € 116) and Budapest (5.2 stars, € 108).

A true "surprise" is Alicante's Airport in Spain, where hotels are scored by 4.78 stars and charge just € 78 per night. The combined performance of high-cost and low-cost satisfaction makes the area one of the most advantageous stay near an airport in Europe.

Germany and northern Italy: Luxury experiences at cost

On the opposite bank, Germany and northern Italy offer extremely high-quality hotels, with corresponding high prices. Milan-Malpensa Airport holds the top spot with 5.55 stars and an average € 116, while Bergamo follows with 5.47 stars and costs € 130.

In Germany, Munich Airport stands out with 5.5 stars and a price € 228 a night, offering spacious rooms of about 27 sq.m - Right above the European average. Düsseldorf follows 5.3 stars and price € 165, while Frankfurt offers a more economical combination of quality and cost (5.05 stars, € 135).

Big cities, small yields

Unlike expectations, many of Europe's major tourist cities are disappointed in the quality and price relationship of airport hotels. Rome is in the last place on the list, with just 4.17 stars and costs of € 293 per night. Dublin and Barcelona do not go much better, offering low-cost ratings.

Even more frustrating is the case of Palma de Mallorca, where the rooms are the smallest in Europe, with an average of only 14.2 sqm, which significantly reduces the comfort of the traveler.

Athens: The most expensive stay in Europe

Athens wins the informal title of the most accurate stay at an airport hotel in Europe. The only 5-star hotel in "Eleftherios Venizelos" costs an average of € 433 per night. Its rating (5.4 stars) and room size (28 sqm) partially justify the high price, but the comparison with Alicante, where one could stay more than five nights with the same amount, highlights the enormous inequalities in European markets.

Conclusions for the traveler

The new image of airport hotels in Europe is clearly improved, with many units offering quality accommodation, spacious rooms, and modern amenities. However, the "geography of value" remains extremely unbalanced. From Athens' "luxurious but expensive", to the economic but remarkable choices of Eastern Europe, the passenger is called upon to choose wisely - and perhaps to think again what it really means "worth it".
