The world's top-10 underground hotels

The 10 best underground hotels in the world were presented by the British newspaper Telegraph.

In most cases, they are old mines that have been turned into impressive rooms, many meters below ground surface.

Their services range from the very basic to luxurious spa, while temperatures are kept at relatively low levels.

Sala Silvergruva, Sala, Sweden

Located almost 500ft below ground, this hotel with a silver mining past is located in an eerie collection of twisting, blackened alleys and dark glittering lakes.  Pack your woolly jumpers  — the temperatures are two degrees year-round.

Argos in Cappadocia, Turkey

A panoply of caves and winding subterranean tunnels carved from volcanic lava spewed out by the neighbouring Mount Erciyes. The subterrestrial cave pool is a focal point.

The Lookout Cave Underground Motel, South Australia

The Australian outback town of Coober Pedy is known as the 'opal mining capital of the world'. It is also famous for its underground houses, knowns as 'dugouts'; they offer reprieve from the area's scorching daytime heat. This lovely little family-run 'dugout' hotel sunk into a hillside is particularly well decked out and welcoming.

Hobbit Motels at Woodlyn Park,Waitomo, New Zealand

The world’s first set of hobbit motels, moulded into a cliff on an entrepreneur’s nine-acre estate — which also features accommodation options in a boat and a plane. Expect authentic circular windows and doors.

Grand Canyon Caverns, Arizona

A suite located 220ft — or 22 stories — below ground that hosts the largest dry caverns in the United States. Expect a spacious suite crammed with old books, a National Geographic collection going back to 1917, and cool, clean, lime-purified air. Thankfully, there is also a lift.

Cumberland Caverns Tennessee, USA

Not for the faint-hearted, this is the rough-and-readiest option of the list. Not so much a hotel, as an overnight cave camping experience, in one of the longest caves in the United States. It is home to stalagmites, cave pearls and beautiful specimens of fossilised coral.

Desert Cave Hotel, South Australia

Another underground hotel in South Australia’s Coober Peddy with 19 special underground suites. Among the facilities is an underground shopping arcade with an upmarket opal jewellery boutique.

White Cliffs Underground Motel, New South Wales, Australia

A subterranean hotel deep in the outback, fashioned from a former opal mining complex. It was built almost completely by hand — using jackhammers no less! The rooms, called 'dugouts', sleep five, making them ideal for families.

Kokopelli Cave, New Mexico

Guests must navigate 70ft below ground to reach the living quarters of this quaint sandstone cave. The rooms include a replica Native American kiva, and there are luxurious touches like a hot tub. Clambering back to ground level at sunset to enjoy the glorious views of La Plata River Valley is a must.

The Caves Hotel & Spa, Negril, Jamaica

Luxurious cottages chiselled into Negril’s honeycomb coastal cliffs. Expect walls studded with fossilised marine life, a private cave dining room, and seaview spa.
