Eco-conscience is generally on the rise in Greece, and particularly in the Greek capital, Alexia Amvrazi notes in a recent report posted by greekcitytimes.com.

There are now several shops selling organic, healthy, mostly ethically-sourced (from small, local producers) products of all varieties, from foodstuffs and cosmetics to jewellery, accessories, and decor or utilitarian items.

Perhaps for eager keen green shoppers, the attraction doesn’t go much deeper than the trendy allure of living a healthier lifestyle for just a few extra bucks, but for many, there is an authentic awakening, the emergence of a new interest and desire in holistic, healthy and eco-friendly products. Here we list the top five green food shops to not miss in Athens:

Four Seasons, 30 Nikis, Syntagma is one of Athens’ most highly reputed (for both its product quality and services) organic mini-markets, Tesseres Epoches sells a large and satisfying variety of eco-friendly and organic foods, household products and cosmetics from around Greece and the world. It’s where you’ll find delicious Cretan avocados – and even papayas and mangos! – essential oils by local botanists, protein powders, Bach flower remedies, and food supplements. Soon also online.

Bamboo Vegan, 102 Solonos & Mavromichali, Exarcheiais a mini-market in a neighbourhood that’s becoming known for its vegan scene almost as much as for its anarchic reputation. The store won’t let you down if you’re looking for cheese and meat replacements and even vegan pet-food, as well as groceries, supplements, cosmetics and sweets, superfoods and ecological household cleaning products. Also online.

Viologiko Horio, Kolonaki, Psychiko, Halandri, Voula, Nea Smyrni is another (literally) big indicator of Athens growing love for organic and environmentally-friendly produce, this proper-sized supermarket has it all. It supplies its wide and varied clientele everything from rom every variety of fresh, dried, frozen, powdered, local and foreign food product to  generous array of supplements, cosmetic products, household items and cleaning products, this popular supermarket caters to a wide and selective clientele. Also online.

Bioway, 57 Panepistimiou, Omonia sells a huge variety of Greek and international organic foods, eco-friendly products, cosmetics, home utilitarian items and supplements. However, what makes it stand out the most is that it sells a large choice of sophisticated and otherwise hard to find equipment and machines that support a green lifestyle; amongst them are dehydrators, wooden flour mills, humidifiers, blenders, an oil press extractor, salt pipe and ecological cups. Also online.

Bioshop, 30 Veikou Ave., Galatsi Books, gardening accessories and products and salt crystal lighting are amongst the categories of goods that make this store stand out. They also sell a wide range of wellness products (like salt inhalers, organic cosmetics, eco household items, supplements and superfoods), and every variety of local and global foods. Also online.
