Greek island among 7 off-the-grid private resorts you've probably never heard

Greek island among 7 off-the-grid private resorts you've probably never heardTatler presents a private island just for you (and whoever you might like to invite). Now that's heaven...

One of seven off-the-grid private islands you've probably never heard of is located in Greece, according to leading British travel and lifestyle magazine Tatler, which belongs to the Conde Nast Traveler's publications.

Tatler describes these heavenly retreats as follows:

Greek Island Retreat, Cyclades

If only our grandfather had bought a Greek island 100 years ago and left it to us... Fortunately, Maria is happy to share her ravishing inherited 900-acre patch. There's the elegant villa, the sandy coves and a garden to plunder for tomatoes, herbs and figs. Encircled by cypress and olive trees, the villa is just steps from the beach and feels a million miles from anywhere, despite being only a 30-minute speedboat ride from Athens.

Inn at Cuckolds Lighthouse, Maine

Of course New England has islands, but you can have one to yourself. This tiny dot of a place is just made for writing novels - or reading them in an Adirondack chair as you eat afternoon tea to a soundtrack of crashing waves and the cries of eagles. Built in 1892, the renovated lighthouse is now a coveted B&B with two chic suites (take both), each with mesmerising sea views. Breakfasts of freshly baked muffins, scones and eggs served in the fire-warmed kitchen set you up for days of gently pottering around the tidal pools, spotting seals, kayaking and sea-gazing.

Satellite Island, Tasmania

Deposited in the cliff-lined D'Entrecasteaux Channel between Tasmania and Bruny Island, 84-acre Satellite Island is a lovely mix of lush, wild and rugged. It accommodates eight guests and many more deer, sheep and chickens. Pick the Scandi-meets-Hamptons two-bedroom Boathouse if you want to be lulled to sleep by the sound of waves, or the three-bedroom Summer House for sweeping views and access to the kitchen, which is stocked with local breakfast provisions and a bottomless supply of fresh oysters. Days slip past nicely with windswept island walks, paddleboarding and oyster-shucking by the firepit.

Calala Island, Nicaragua

Calala is a real castaway island, a handkerchief of bone-white sand and palm trees floating in topaz waters. It's a wide-eyed, 90-minute speedboat trip from the nearest airport, but then you get there and a team of 25 beaming staff deal with everything you require. Spend the days snorkelling, hunting for coconuts and paddling to Little Calala for sundowners before feasting on candlelit suppers.

Isola Santa Cristina, Venice

The last thing you expect to find so close to the touristy hysteria of Venice is a cloistered retreat - your very own island where only peacocks and pheasants break the stillness. Just 30 minutes from the city by water taxi (the island's skippered boat is at your disposal, as is the helicopter pad), Isola Santa Cristina is owned by René Deutsch, of the Swarovski family. But fear not - this place is sparkle- free. The Prada-pink villa sleeps 15 (in eight ensuite bedrooms) and is decked out in neutral tones, with views of orchards and calm lagoons. There's a rooftop lookout tower, a Slim Aarons-style pool with a vast deck, an outdoor terrace with open fireplace, maid service and a chef on request - the food comes from the nearby islands of Burano, Torcello and Mazzorbo. There is even a vineyard, a yoga studio and a small crumbling church, for languid afternoon drinking, a quick downward dog or a shotgun wedding. How thoughtful.

Mariefred, Sweden

In summer, smart Stockholmers hit the lakes to while away long days in off-the-grid seclusion. Just across Lake Mälaren from the pretty town of Mariefred and fairytale Gripsholm Castle lies the perfect private islet: a Gustavian-style, three-bedroom main house; two cute one-bedroom houses, including the ultra-romantic lake house; and a sauna. If you run out of crayfish and aquavit, a motorboat is also provided.

Mayo Landing, Cotswolds

Yes, it's a private island in the Cotswolds. And, yes, that sounds weird. But listen: as soon as you drive across the bridge onto Mayo Landing, which is set within a 130-acre nature reserve, you could almost be in the wilds of Scandinavia. There's a six-bedroom house with swimming pool, hot tub and sauna cabin (seven other log cabins dot the shores of the lake, but this one's the best). Also on offer are paddleboarding and marshmallow-roasting by the firepit - and you won't be needing your passport.
