Tree planting and felling in Thessaloniki

The Thessaloniki Municipal Committee approved the acceptance of a donation from the Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the amount of 6,000 euros plus VAT, which concerns the planting of 100 trees in the Municipality of Thessaloniki, under the supervision of the Directorate of Greenery and Environment.

The Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce and Industry, on the occasion of the celebration of 100 years since its establishment and operation (1925-2025), will implement a set of events of a social, cultural and informative nature. In this context, the administration of the Thessaloniki Chamber of Commerce and Industry decided to contribute to the increase in green spaces by planting 100 trees, a symbolic number as it is the same as the years of presence of the Chamber in the public sphere. The planting locations, species and technical characteristics of the trees will be determined by the Directorate of Greenery and Environment.

It should be noted that the Directorate of Greenery & Environment, within the framework of its responsibilities regarding the management of trees in green spaces (groves, parks, roadside islands, tree rows, flower beds, etc.), plans and carries out pruning, at the appropriate time, for the protection and unhindered growth of trees.

Within the urban fabric, trees do not grow in the same way as in their natural ecosystem. A tree, in its typical form, is straight, vertical, cylindrical at least in parts of the trunk and with a circular cross-section. The trees that grow in the city have acclimatized to the climate of the area, but some of them show major deviations from their typical form as well as severe structural defects such as rot, tilt, bending and curvature of the trunk, superficial and "superficial" root system, etc. as a result, their stability is often affected and due to their great age, these trees, on the one hand, become extremely dangerous, for the safety of the residents and on the other hand, for any damage caused by destruction of infrastructure and equipment in the event of their fall after possible severe bad weather (strong gusts of wind).

Given the above and the fact that the Directorate received written requests for cutting requests, it made relevant decisions. In detail, the false acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia) growing in the courtyard of Villa Mordoch presents a slope, a weak trunk, cavitation, trunk rot, chlorosis of the crown and stunted growth. Also, the pine tree growing in the area of Th. Sofouli 64 with Kapetan Goni presents a very strong slope, drying and stunted growth. In this context, the Directorate decided to cut down the 2 trees and restore them by planting new ST trees to maintain the green balance.
