Crete: Pioneer for resilient tourism in the face of climate change

The Region of Crete gave a dynamic "presence" to the interactive seminar held in Marseille, within the framework of the European project NaTour4CChange of the Interreg Euro MED program, on the implementation of nature-based solutions in tourist areas affected by climate change.

The three-day seminar brought together project partners and representatives from pilot areas, focusing on the exchange of know-how and experiences for the adaptation of tourist destinations to the new climate challenges.

The Region of Crete was represented by Vasiliki Madoulka, Head of the Independent Department of European and International Affairs and Coordinator of the project, as well as Nikolaos Zervos, external collaborator and member of the Project Team. From the pilot area “Zakros Mountains and Koufonissi Island” participated Elisabeth Karniadaki, member of the support team of the Municipality of Sitia.

Participants had the opportunity to engage in interactive activities, design workshops, and role-playing games under the guidance of experts from the European Agency NBSCLIMATE, Irene Morell Rodríguez and Claudia Sánchez. Particular interest was attracted by the presentation of Samson Bellières from Plan Bleu, using geospatial maps and data from the organization’s Observatory, which highlighted critical information on the climate, vulnerability, and resilience of the areas.

The seminar highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation for a tourism that respects and protects the natural environment. The NaTour4CChange project is coordinated by the Region of Crete and the Regional Advisor for European and International Affairs, George Alexakis, with implementation carried out by the Independent Department of European and International Affairs and Development of Partnerships
