The 4th Chios Festival - From Antiquity to Artificial Intelligence is Completed

Chios was transformed for twelve days into an open theater of Culture and Contemporary Creation. As part of the 4th THE CHIOS FESTIVAL, leading academics, artists and creators from Greece and abroad met at emblematic locations on the island, uniting ideas, values ​​and eras - from the ancient lands of the Aegean to the cutting edge of Artificial Intelligence.

The festival took place on August 25 - September 7, 2025 in Chios. In this context, events were hosted in historical/emblematic places (Emporeios, Nea Moni, Avgonyma, Chios Castle, Castelli, Petrokaravo, Anavatos) while its themes were Artificial Intelligence & Ethics, Biotechnology, Environment & Art, Innovation and Cultural Diplomacy.

Highlights & Highlights
· Emporios — Archaeological Site: Associate Professor of Archaeology at the National University of Athens Vasilis Lambrinoudakis and Rebecca Sweetman (Professor, Director of the British School of Archaeology in Athens) spoke about the history and antiquities of Chios. The evening concluded with the Lyrica choral ensemble. Presentation: Yiannis Tzoumas, with a reading of Sir Roderick Beaton’s greeting.

· Kardamyla — Limanaki: A musical encounter from both sides of the Aegean with lyre virtuosos Sokratis Sinopoulos and Çağlar Fidan, with Nikos Papageorgiou and Derya Türkan on vocals — an evening that proved that music bridges cultures.

· Nea Moni & Avgonyma: Byzantinologist Teresa Shawcross (Princeton) and academic Ioli Kalavrezou (Harvard) highlighted the architecture and art of the UNESCO monument of Nea Moni, connecting it with the Byzantine history of Chios. In Avgonyma, composer Thodoris Economou presented the musical universe “Kyrie, Ekekraxa” with Ninetta Vafeia.

· Castelli — Artificial Intelligence, Environment & Art, Biotechnology & Innovation: Series of thematic topics with Panagiotis Roilos (Harvard/EKD), Nektarios Tavernarakis (Medical School of the University of Crete/Forth), Spyros N. Pollali (Harvard/Coll. of Athens), Konstantinos Fili (IDIS), Lou Marinoff (CUNY), Xiaojun Ding (Jiaotong), Nikos Sifounakis, Lydia Karras (ELLET), Niki Boutari (Just a Number), Nicholas Pappas (CUNY), Michele Casamonti (Tornabuoni Art) & Naki Panagiotidis. Followed by: discussion by Dr. Stelios Papadopoulos with Tasoula Eptakoilis, Academician Stamatis Krimizis, Dr. George Nunesis (Demokritos) and Darwin Caldwell (Italian Institute of Technology).

· Musical evenings at Castelli: Songs from Greek and foreign cinema with Ninetta Vafeia and Fotis Nezis (piano), and Sofia Papadimitropoulou.

· Italian Evening at the Castle of Chios: In the presence of the Italian Ambassador Paolo Cuculi, musicians from the Teatro Carlo Felice of Genoa presented works by Beethoven and Paganini, followed by dances from Southern Italy/Apulia by the Agrikó group.

· Homer Cultural Center: Screening of the film “I Exist” and discussion with George Tsemberopoulos, Katerina Bey and Asimenia Voulioti (coordinated by Mary Avgerinopoulou). A musical tribute with Chian artists followed in the square.

· Petrokaravo Vrontadou: The Ballet of the National Opera presented the diptych “Return of the Summer” (choreography by Konstantinos Rigos & Yannis Mantafounis) to music by Hector Berlioz and George Koumendakis.

· Ai Giorgis Sykousis: Gastronomy festival and traditional feast with local clubs, with chef Petros Syrigos (presentation: Christos Nezos).

· Finale in Anavatos (“Mystras of Chios”): Karyofyllia Karambeti presented the monologue of Medea with conductor Marcellos Chryssikopoulos on the piano.

The 4th THE CHIOS FESTIVAL was held under the auspices of UNESCO Greece, with the support of the Italian and Swiss Embassies.
