Chios becomes… a track for the Panhellenic Drift and GP Championship

The island of Homer and mastic is preparing to welcome an event of high speeds and intense emotions. On June 7 and 8, the Military Airstrip of Olympus is transformed into an impressive racing track, hosting the 5th race of the Panhellenic Drift and GP Time Trial Championship.

Chios, famous for its cultural heritage and natural landscapes, is adding a dynamic motorsports event to its summer calendar this year. Dozens of competitors from every corner of Greece will travel to the island to take part in the event, which is expected to attract both Drift and time trial enthusiasts.

Drift, known for its spectacular passes and the skill of the drivers in the corners, is combined with the GP Time Trial Race, where precision and speed determine the result. The airstrip of Olympus, with its flat and wide road surface, offers the ideal terrain for the demands of the race.

The event is co-organized by the Municipality of Chios and the Chios Motorists’ Athletic Association – ASAX, under the official auspices of the Hellenic Motor Sports Federation (OMAE), ensuring compliance with the highest standards of safety and professionalism.

The program includes three types of races that promise a rich spectacle: individual time trial (GP), side-sliding (Drift), and driving on a straight 400-meter track (Drag). Of particular interest is Drift, the spectacular driving technique where the driver causes a controlled loss of traction on the wheels, leading the vehicle into impressive, breathtaking skids.

The ASAX, with 43 active members from Chios and Samos, participates in the Panhellenic Championship every year, showcasing local talent and passion for motorsports. This year, it is estimated that 35 teams will compete, while at least 800 visitors are expected, including competitors, mechanics, and escorts, who will arrive in Chios at their own expense.

This sporting event also has a strong tourist impact. The local economy is expected to be significantly strengthened, with increased traffic in hotels, rooms to rent, restaurants, cafes, gas stations, garages, and other businesses. At the same time, participants will have the opportunity to get to know Chios better, a place with a rich history, unique natural beauty, and authentic gastronomy.

With this event, Chios is not just hosting another race, but is strengthening its position on the map of motorsports, while simultaneously showcasing its cultural identity to an audience that, under other circumstances, might not have visited it. It is a rapid but steady path towards strengthening thematic tourism, with the excitement and liveliness of motorsports as a backdrop.
