Easter in Syros, Paros, Kimolos, and Alonissos | What the island authorities say to TN

Easter on the Greek islands is always special, with customs, traditions and a devout atmosphere reinforcing the cultural identity of each place. Speaking to Tornos News, authorities of Syros, Alonissos, Kimolos and Paros convey to us in rough outlines the Easter climate sprinkled with estimates for the number of visitors during the period.

Syros: Where the two traditions coexist

In Syros, this year's Easter takes on even greater importance, as the celebrations of the Orthodox and Catholics coincide. The highlight of the events is the joint procession of the Epitaphs in Miaoulis Square, a unique event of religious unity. The Deputy Mayor for Tourism, Yiannis Voutsinos (photo), highlights this year’s increased tourist traffic, noting the upgrade of services, enhanced ferry connections, and the doubling of cruise ship arrivals in Ermoupolis.

Kimolos: An island, a tradition of faith

In Kimolos, Easter is experienced in a climate of deep devotion. With more than 80 churches and chapels – many of which are family-owned and passed down from generation to generation – the island honors tradition. The impressive church of Panagia Hodigitria stands out, built with the personal labor of the residents between 1867 and 1874.

Paros: Religiosity with a cosmopolitan air

Paros attracts the attention of visitors every Easter. Traditional customs, such as egg painting, local sweets and processions, are combined with the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the island.
On Holy Thursday, women decorate the Epitaph, while on Good Friday, representations of the Passion of Christ are held.

On Saturday, the faithful collect aromatic herbs on the First Resurrection, and on Easter day, processions and festivals with free food and wine are held. In Naoussa and Parikia, the epitaphs roam in common processions, while the festive and lively atmosphere attracts many visitors. In fact, in a recent statement, the mayor Costas Bizas (photo) expressed his optimism about the development of this year's tourist season and even spoke of increased traffic during the Easter period.

Alonissos: Easter in the middle of nature

In Alonissos, Easter is a celebration of nature and the soul. Kiki Anagnostou, President of the Municipal Council (photo), says that spring brings out the authentic beauty of the island. In addition to religious ceremonies, visitors can enjoy walks, cycling, running, local flavors and, why not, a dip in the crystal clear waters.

This year, access to the island is easier, thanks to new ferry connections from Volos and Mantoudi in Evia, offering more options for Easter getaways.
