For the first time, the performance of an ancient Greek play will be streamed live from Epidaurus, on Saturday, July 25, 2020, at 21.00, int.ert.gr reports.

In the framework of this year’s Athens and Epidaurus Festival, the National Theatre of Greece will present Aeschylus’s play “The Persians” in Greek with English subtitles.

This event is realized with the support of Greece's Ministry of Culture and Sports and in collaboration with Google Greece.

“Many European festivals canceled their program this year due to COVID-19. The Athens and Epidaurus Festival, determined not to be away from its audience, during this difficult summer of 2020, presents a new condensed program entitled SUBSET. As part of this year’s Festival, for the first time, and in fact during a pandemic – an iconic production of ancient Greek drama will be streamed live on the internet. It is also the first time that a play from the ancient theater of Epidaurus is broadcast live”, notes the Ministry of Culture in its press release.

The National Theatre of Greece, with the support of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Sports, will present the play in commemoration of the 25th centennial of the Battle of Salamis.

National Theater Artistic Director and the play’s director, Dimitris Lignadis says: “In the forced confinement due to the pandemic, art and theater emerged once again as vital human needs, as a place of refuge. The National Theater of Greece, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, invites the whole planet to come to the ancient theater of Epidaurus, the most beautiful theater in the world, to witness, digitally, the ancient Greek play”.

The play is in Greek with English subtitles and lasts approximately 90 minutes. It will be streamed through the portal livefromepidaurus.gr and will be also available at the websites of the National Theatre of Greece, the Athens and Epidaurus Festival and the Ministry of Culture and Sport, as well as the National Theatre of Greece’s YouTube channel.
