Greek sculptor of magnetism, light and sound at Tate Modern in London

During a 70-year career, Takis (Panayiotis Vassilakis) has created some of the most innovative art of the 20th century, int.ert.gr reports.

His work seeks out the essential poetry and beauty of the electromagnetic universe. He was one of the most original artistic voices in Europe from the 1960s and remains a pioneering figure nowadays.

The most comprehensive show of Takis’ work, opened recently at London’s Tate Modern titled: “Takis: Sculptor of magnetism, light and sound” and will run through October 27.

This the biggest exhibition of Takis’s work ever held in the UK, bringing together over 70 works. Throughout his career he has produced antennae-like sculptures he calls Signals, and musical devices using magnets, electricity and viewer participation to generate resonant and random sounds. Such inventions earned Takis the admiration of the international avant-garde, ranging from the American Beat poets to artists such as Marcel Duchamp.

At Tate Modern, visitors will encounter forests of Signal sculptures and magnetic objects inspired by radar. The thunderous sounds of Takis’s Musicales, his Silver Musical Sphere and his Gong will conclude the journey.

About Takis

Panayiotis Vassilakis, born in Athens in 1925, was influenced by ancient sculpture, Cycladic art and the works of Giacometti. He managed to create a whole new territory in contemporary art, making magnetism, light and sound his central tools of creation. Drawing on these forces, he created unique, instantly recognizable works that influenced many significant visual artists, including the superstar Olafur Eliasson.

The exhibition is organized by Tate Modern in cooperation with the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona, where it will open on 21 November 2019, while on May 20, 2020 the exhibition will come to Athens’ Museum of Cycladic Art.
