An evening with Dr Jane Goodall in Thessaloniki, Athens and Crete (video)
Jane Goodall, one of the most important British female scientists of our time and a United Nations Messenger of Peace, is visiting Thessaloniki, Athens and Heraklion, Crete to talk about ‘Reasons for Hope’, int.ert.gr reports.
During her visit to Greece, she will give talks in Thessaloniki (Olympion cinema), Athens (Pallas Theater) and Heraklion, Crete (Cultural Center of Heraklion). In addition, she will attend events at the American Community Schools (Athens) and the Pinewood American International School (Thessaloniki), as well as at the Natural History Museum of Crete – University of Crete, whose students have completed projects through the Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots program.
The lectures are addressed to the general public: scientists, educators, students, adolescents and adults who want to meet her and be inspired by her work. They are held by the non-profit organization Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Greece, the Thessaloniki Film Festival and the British Council and is sponsored by the Pinewood American International School.
Admission is free while simultaneous translation into Greek will be provided.
Who is Jane Goodall
Dr Goodall is widely known for her environmental and humanitarian work spanning over 50 years. She initially set foot on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, Tanzania – now known as the Gombe Stream National Park – in July 1960 to embark on an important study of wild chimpanzees. From then on, her advocacy on behalf of chimpanzees and the environment started to grow, raising huge awareness from all quarters for the causes. Today, Dr Goodall focuses on giving inspiring talks and speaking on behalf of endangered species, particularly chimpanzees, and encouraging people to do their part to make the world a better place for people, animals and the environment.
In 1991 she established Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots in order to empower and encourage youth of all ages to pursue their passion, mobilise their peers and become the leaders our world needs in order to ensure a better future for people, animals and the environment. The program has also been implemented in Greece in recent years. Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Greece was established in 2017 as a non-profit organization and organizes seminars for teachers on experiential learning, grants scholarships to children and young people who develop the project and organizes actions for the environment, society and animals.
