International conference in Greek island of Lemnos on the Treaty of Moudros

On the occasion of the completion of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I and in particular from the signing of the Treaty of Moudros, in 2018 there will be celebrations on the island of Lemnos. 

These events are of great importance, not only for the local community of Lemnos and the Region of North Aegean, but also for Greece, which will be highlighted, as all actions have an international character.

On October 30th, 1918 the Ottoman Empire signed in Moudros of Lemnos a truce for the strength of the Entente. The truce was essentially going to end hostilities between the Ottoman empire and the British forces along with their allies at midnight the next day. The truce was signed on a British war ship called the "HMS Agamemnon" which had the most power to close the Dardanelles straits from 1916 to 1918, by the naval commander for the Ottoman empire Rauf Bey and the British naval commander Somerset Arthur Gough-Calthorpe. 

After the successful attack of the British and French along the Macedonian side on September 15th and successfully breaking through that Macedonian side on September 18th since developments had been accelerating. The French, the Serbs, and the Greeks increased speed towards Belgrade while the British and the Greeks did the same thing towards Constantinople. Bulgaria came up with the truce and stopped hostilities on September 29th in Thessaloniki. The Ottoman empire found itself in a difficult position and started the negotiations for the surrender on October 27th which were accepted on October 30th . 

During the treaty, the Entente forces gained the right to enter the Straits and occupy every territory of the Ottoman Empire that threatened their security. On November 12th , French troops entered Constantinople and the following day came the British, the Italians and the Greeks. A brilliant page was written in the history of the island on that day. 

Lemnos has always been a strategically important army landmark for Greece because it is a natural border that Europe shares with Asia. In previous years, it became wider known for its role as a ?brute force? of the Allies in WWI and similarly in Gallipoli?s campaign. This important factor in combination with the use of Moudros to sign the treaty where Turkey surrendered to the British in 1918, was the start of our country making world history in the more recent years. 

So 100 years later, the Ministry of Hellenic National Defense in cooperation with the "Lemnos? Friends of Anzac" Association, undertook to shape the national planning of events of particular - global - but also of Greek importance for our country and set for 2018, a central Greek event of national and global importance, the "Centenary of the signing of the Treaty of Moudros". He invites through our Association as Culture Organization, the Region of North Aegean and the Municipality of Lemnos, to welcome and carry out the relevant planning, taking "under their umbrella" a series of events that will gradually lead to the central event that will take place in Lemnos on 31 October 2018.
