SingularityU Athens Chapter launch event at Benaki Museum on Monday

An event to introduce the Singularity University and "Silicon Valley Thinking" in Greece, with a glimpse at the potential offered by rapidly growing technologies, will take place at Benaki Museum on Pireos 138 on Monday evening.

TEDxAcademy and Niki Siropoulou, the Ambassador Singularity University Athens, will hold the SingularityU Athens launch event, where speakers will present SingularityU Athens and its programme, while explaining how SingularityU works around the globe.

Talking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), Siropoulou pointed out that it is a global community for thinking, research and business actions that familiarise society with the rapid developments and impact of technology, while at the same time acting as a framework for business activity.

It began at the NASA research centre in 2008, in Silicon Valley in California, founded by two notable scientists, entrepreneurs and authors, Ray Kurzwei and Peter Diamandis. It brings together young leaders from the private, public and business sectors to train in new technologies in order to achieve further growth and prosperity, Siropoulou said.

In Greece, SingularityU will first address young people, students and entrepreneurs with start-up businesses, she noted.

"Our mission is to inspire creative and innovative minds in our country, so that through the use of technology we can manage the major challenges and push Greek society and the Greek economy in a creative and growth course," she added.

Even though SingularityU had started off in countries that had embraced technology, such as Denmark or the Netherlands, it was now launching in Greece "because the society has greater need as regards the challenges of tomorrow, the changes in global technology that will also change professions. We want to highlight these things in a practical, not a theoretical, way and to show that they can apply to Greece. To be done with theory and go to action," Siropoulou stressed.

SingularityU Athens will play the role of coordinator and mediator between students, researchers and entrepreneurs so that a comprehensive plan can emerge, she underlined. "What we offer is a way of thinking, a methodology and opportunities for the businesses of tomorrow," she added.

Keynote speakers at the event in Athens will be Siropoulou and Aristos Doxiadis, who will present SingularityU Athens, and then be jointed by David Katz and David Orban, Singularity faculty from Italy and Canada, for a panel discussion and Q & A on the topic "How does SingularityU work in the world and in Greece: Experiences from Singularity University's work and its usefulness to Greek society."

Participation is free of charge but applications for invitations have now closed, even though the event can be live streamed through the SingularityU website.
