The restoration of the Municipal Market of Chania is in the final stretch

In the coming weeks, the installation of the roof on the eastern part of the Municipal Market of Chania is expected to be completed, while the installation of the low roofs corresponding to the shops is scheduled to begin by the end of July, as the Municipality's technical services informed today. At the same time, the first painting of the upper part of the historic building is planned, as well as the preparation for the installation of air conditioning systems and the restoration of the facades.

The above was presented in the context of an on-site inspection carried out at the construction site of the Market by the Mayor of Chania, Panagiotis Simandirakis, accompanied by elected and official figures of the Municipality.

"We have entered a phase of intensive work. The project is now moving forward, the issues that arose with Archaeology have been addressed, funding has been secured, and I believe that we are leaving the delays of the past behind us”, said Mr. Simandirakis. He himself spoke about the intense presence of crews and workers at the construction site, noting that the goal is to complete the interventions without new obstacles, so that the reconstructed area can be returned to the people of Chania and the professionals who operate there.

Special mention was also made of the new operating regulations of the Municipal Market, with the Mayor underlining that it is already in the process of being drafted, following comparative research in European markets. As he said, consultation with professionals and institutional bodies will precede, so that the operation of the Market after the restoration is based on a modern and sustainable framework that will favor local entrepreneurship.

For his part, the Director of Technical Services of the Municipality, Giorgos Efthymiou, reported that the works have been significantly accelerated. In addition to the progress on the roof, part of the frames have already been constructed, while the start of external interventions on the facades of the building is imminent, in collaboration with the Service for Modern Monuments.

The restoration project of the Municipal Market includes the strengthening of the structure, the restoration of foundations, the complete replacement of the roof, and a series of interventions aimed at the revival of this historical landmark. The Market, which for decades was the core of social and commercial life in the center of Chania, aspires to reconnect with the city and its people — this time in modern terms but with respect for its historical identity.
