Municipality of Drama: Highlighting and integrating Byzantine fortification into urban fabric

The Municipality of Drama is proceeding with the highlight and integration of the Byzantine fortification of Drama into the urban fabric of the city, with its agreement on the proposal for a preliminary investigation of the spatial data. The proposal is included in the study by the architect and engineer Yannis Vassiliadis, entitled “Architectural study for the northern section of the wall of Drama”, which examines the current state of the wall and proposes actions for its conservation, restoration, and highlighting.
Historical context
The castle of Drama is an important part of the Byzantine fortification, with construction phases extending from late antiquity to the Middle Ages. The study investigates the evolution of the fortification complex, the historical changes that influenced its structure, and its relationship with the modern urban fabric. It records previous scientific research and restoration interventions, highlighting the importance of the monument for the region.
Analysis and documentation
The architectural analysis focuses on the characteristics of the monument, such as the walls, towers, and gates. The structural techniques, construction materials, and later interventions are recorded. The study attempts a chronological assessment of the building phases based on archaeological findings and historical sources.
Diagnosis of the state of conservation
A crucial part of the study concerns the assessment of the conservation of the monument. Damage from natural and anthropogenic causes is recorded, such as erosion, collapse of sections, and plant growth, while the needs for immediate intervention are examined to ensure the stability and aesthetics of the monument.
Proposed actions
In the final part of the study, actions are proposed for the maintenance and restoration of the fortification complex using appropriate materials and modern technical interventions. In addition, its integration into the cultural life of the city through educational and tourist initiatives is proposed.
The proposed interventions include:
· Structural reinforcement and maintenance of the monuments.
· Removal harmful additions and earthworks.
· Redevelopment of public spaces and improvement of accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists.
· Creation of cultural routes that will connect the most important monuments in the area.
Planning and financing
The study includes a timetable for the implementation of the proposed actions and analyzes possible sources of financing, such as European programs, national resources, and private sponsorships.
Conclusions and expected benefits
The implementation of the interventions is expected to contribute to the preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of Drama while improving the aesthetics and functionality of the urban space, enhancing the quality of life of residents, and tourism development. The study constitutes a comprehensive action plan for the protection and promotion of the cultural identity of the city, ensuring its sustainable development.
Following this, and in relation to the request of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Drama, the Municipality of Drama expressed its agreement with the provisions of the study in order to complete its approval by the relevant services.
