Today is World Sleep Day, and now more than ever, we recognize the importance of quality sleep for our health and well-being. A new study by Compare the Market AU sheds light on a crucial factor for a good night’s sleep: the living environment.

The study analyzes 39 European cities, examining factors such as population, traffic congestion, tranquility, parks, and walking paths. The results reveal the ideal cities for a quiet life and, therefore, for a more restful sleep.

At the top of the list is Graz in Austria, followed by Canberra and Zurich. These cities offer a peaceful environment with low levels of noise and stress, which are essential for a deep and refreshing sleep.

In the European ranking, Thessaloniki is in 37th place, while Athens is ranked last (39th) in Europe with a 55.9 crime score and over 3 million. These data highlight the importance of choosing a quiet and safe environment for our sleep.

The three best cities

At the top of the list of the best cities in the world for peaceful living was, as mentioned above, Graz in Austria, with a score of 5.344 out of 8. With one of the highest peace scores, low crime rates, and just 5.36 clubs and bars per 100,000 inhabitants, Graz is the ideal city for those who prefer a quiet lifestyle.

Occupying second place in the global ranking, we travel to Canberra, Australia. Despite its status as a capital city, Canberra is renowned as one of the world’s quietest cities. With a low traffic congestion rate of 21%, nearly 250 walking trails, and plenty of yoga studios to unwind, Canberra offers an ideal environment for safe living. The city is renowned for giving residents the freedom to pursue their interests and for its excellent work-life balance.

Securing third place is Zurich, Switzerland, which is renowned as one of the most peaceful and scenic places to live. With its low crime rate and serene public gardens, Zurich offers an idyllic setting for peaceful living. It perfectly caters to individuals who value tranquility over the hustle and bustle of city life.

Europe dominates the top 10 rankings

Overall, European countries dominate the top 10 rankings, with cities such as Helsinki (4,694), Vienna (4,653), Brno (4,646), Munich (4,619), Copenhagen (4,600), and Stockholm (4,583) standing out. Their presence highlights not only their rich cultural heritage and lifestyle, but also their geographical advantage, which promotes a peaceful and tranquil living environment.

Commenting on the study, Stephen Zeller, Managing Director of Compare the Market AU, said: “Quiet living offers many benefits, such as improved sleep quality and reduced stress levels. It enhances mental clarity and creativity while also encouraging meaningful social interactions and a deeper connection with nature. It's great that we can showcase some of the wonderful places around the world where it's best to live if that's the lifestyle you prefer."
