10 actions that will improve the quality of life in Athens

Action that will improve the quality of life in Athens is foreseen by the cooperation between the Municipality of Athens and the University of Athens, which was also sealed with a memorandum of cooperation.

Specifically, the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, and the Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siassos, signed a memorandum of cooperation with the aim of jointly organizing a series of educational, cultural and artistic actions, under the general title "The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in the City".

The joint actions of the Municipality of Athens and the University of Athens began a year ago and resulted in successful events, such as, among others, the Poetry Marathon, the event “Today’s Air Smells” with Aliki Kayaloglou, the section “Poetry: The Negative of Silence” with a tribute to Tito Patrikios, the joint celebration of World Music Day with the musical ensemble of the Department of Music Studies of the National University of Athens, as well as meetings with renowned writers, thinkers, literary figures and scientists in the section “Word and Knowledge in the 21st Century City”.

The Memorandum of Cooperation between the University of Athens and the Municipality of Athens provides, among other things:

  • Promotion and support of educational, cultural, and artistic activities, which will contribute to the strengthening of the cooperation of the two parties, with respect for the identity, priorities, and specific perspectives of each party.
  • Support and promotion of the academic, scientific, social, humanitarian, cultural, and artistic work of both parties through their fruitful and creative cooperation.
  • Development of relations between members of the academic community and representatives of the Municipality of Athens who are active in various social, humanitarian, cultural, and artistic activities taking place in the city of Athens.
Collaboration with the Culture, Sports & Youth Organization of the Municipality of Athens (OPANDA), to implement all the above-mentioned educational, cultural,l and artistic actions.
  • Participation in joint activities, which will be promoted to all citizens of Athens and will concern intellectual, social, humanitarian, and cultural solidarity, in a climate of mutual respect, mutual understanding, and reconciliation, against xenophobia and racial discrimination.
  • Organization of events, such as –indicatively– educational lectures, seminars and working groups, conferences and workshops, education and training programs, painting or photography exhibitions, and other similar actions with topics related to Research, Education, the Environment, History, Art, Culture, etc.
  • Development of joint research, education, and promotion actions in fields scientifically supported by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, as well as joint planning, shaping, and conducting research in specialized scientific and educational thematic fields.
  • Promotion of intangible cultural heritage, through synergies, with public and private bodies.
  • Promotion of joint actions on the official websites and social networks of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the Municipality of Athens
  • Exchange of know-how.

On the occasion of the cooperation, the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, stated: "With this memorandum, we seal the good relationship we already have with the largest and most historic University in the country. Two key pillars of the cultural development of Athens, the Municipality and the National University of Athens, join forces for a fruitful and creative cooperation. Through joint actions, we discover the intangible cultural heritage of Athens."

For his part, the Rector of the University of Athens, Professor Gerasimos Siassos, after the signing of the memorandum, pointed out that “this agreement constitutes another step towards closer cooperation between the Municipality of Athens and the University of Athens. The cooperation between the University of Athens and the Municipality of Athens entitled “The University of Athens in the City” began a year ago, and to date, more than 30 joint events have taken place. This memorandum seals the mutually constructive disposition of extroversion and the long-standing relationship of our Institution with the city of Athens.”
