Dimitris Ptochos | Peloponnese a destination for all

“We aspire to make the Peloponnese a destination for all – tourist, investment, professional”, emphasized the Regional Governor of Peloponnese, Dimitris Ptochos, in his intervention at the 13th Regional Development Conference, which is being held at the Conference and Cultural Center of the University of Patras. To achieve the goal, as he said, ambitious goals have been set, with specific priorities and an implementation plan.

Mr. Ptochos referred extensively to the emblematic effort of the Region for integrated water management, activating large irrigation projects that had remained inactive for decades and planning new interventions aimed at improving agricultural production. At the same time, he underlined the need to create a single water management body, with a public character and modern specifications.

The Regional Governor of Peloponnese also presented a series of other interventions: road works, flood protection, coastal protection works, upgrading of schools and health infrastructure, while he also referred to the importance of the now integrated regional spatial planning, as a prerequisite for attracting investments.

Particular emphasis was also given to the development plan for the Just Transition, where, as he noted, investments of hundreds of millions have already been mobilized. At the same time, the “UNISTARTS” entrepreneurship centers, the Innovation Center in collaboration with the University of Peloponnese, as well as the Climate Change Observatory in collaboration with the Academy of Athens, are progressing.

Regarding young people and demographics, the Regional Governor acknowledged that this is a key challenge: “The decision to stay in one’s place is multifactorial. We are working to ensure that the Peloponnese offers all the resources to make it a life choice for young people.” He stressed that a holistic approach is required – from economic opportunities to infrastructure, education, health, and quality of life.

Finally, regarding the climate crisis, he analyzed the Region’s triple pillar of action: recognition of the problems, targeted financial tools, and cultivation of an environmental culture. He also noted that “the Peloponnese is the first Region in the country with a complete integrated waste management system, a project that was recently approved by the European Commission.”
