Greek Tourism Minister meets with the Ambassadors of Algeria and Romania

The Minister of Tourism, Ms. Olga Kefalogianni, met successively with the Ambassadors of Algeria, Ms. Zaina Benhabouche, and Romania, Ms. Carmen-Ileana Mihalcescu.

During her meeting with the Ambassador of Romania, they agreed that it is necessary to update the bilateral tourism cooperation agreement dating back to 1993, and to expand it within the framework of the European Union, following Romania's full accession to the Schengen area.
Ms. Mihalcescu extended an invitation to the Minister of Tourism to visit Romania, within the first half of 2025.

The discussion with the Ambassador of Algeria focused on the further development of bilateral tourism relations between the two countries and their cooperation at a multilateral level, in international organizations, and in particular in the World Tourism Organization.

The Ambassador of Algeria noted that Greece possesses the know-how and can help her country in the development of sustainable tourism.

Ms. Kefalogianni informed Ms. Benhabouche about the new system for classifying hotels based on their environmental performance, which is a global initiative of Greece and was recently enacted by law by the Greek Parliament.

Furthermore, the issue of signing a bilateral agreement on tourism was discussed, for which a final draft has already been submitted by the Greek side.

It was agreed to proceed quickly with the necessary procedures that will constitute the starting point for further strengthening relations between the two countries and the development of cooperation with investments in the tourism sector.

In both meetings, Ms. Kefalogianni referred to the Greek candidacy of the former Minister of Tourism, Mr. Theocharis, for the position of Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization, and requested the support of both Algeria and Romania.
