Crete celebrates its cultural heritage with two major events in May

In May, Crete celebrates its rich cultural heritage with two major events, scheduled to take place with the support of the Region of Crete.

These events integrate culture and memory, highlighting the historical and natural identity of the island, while underlining the connection of the past with the present and the need for sustainable cultural development and protection of cultural heritage for future generations.

In particular, from 9 to 11 May 2025, the Municipality of Tzermiados Plateau is hosting the cultural festival The Kronion Festival, in collaboration with the Tzermiados Cultural Association “Renaissance”. The event focuses on promoting the area’s caves and highlighting the Plateau’s ridges, which are part of the “NATURA” program. The festival includes a variety of activities that highlight local tradition, natural wealth, and the need to protect cultural heritage, offering experiential experiences for all ages and for visitors from all over the world.

A few days later, on May 18, the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion will host an event in the context of International Museum Day 2025. The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, one of the most important museums in Greece and Europe, hosts unique exhibits covering the history of Crete from the Neolithic era to Roman times, dominated by the collection of Minoan antiquities, which is the most important in the world. The museum, which is housed in a building constructed between 1937 and 1940 by the architect Patroklos Karantinos, is located in the center of Heraklion, on the site of the former Catholic monastery of Agios Francis, which was destroyed by an earthquake in 1856.

These two events offer a dynamic way to connect with the cultural heritage of Crete, illuminating different aspects of it and highlighting the value of preserving and promoting the island's cultural heritage for future generations.
