Record tourist arrivals in Cyprus during August 2018For the period of January – August 2018 arrivals of tourists totaled 2.719.622 compared to 2.517.887 in the corresponding period of 2017,

On the basis of the results of the Passengers Survey, arrivals of tourists reached 534.847 in August 2018 compared to 523.651 in August 2017, recording an increase of 2,1%. August 2018 had the highest volume of tourist arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the specific month.

For the period of January – August 2018 arrivals of tourists totaled 2.719.622 compared to 2.517.887 in the corresponding period of 2017, recording an increase of 8,0% and outnumbering the total arrivals ever recorded in Cyprus during the first eight months of the year. (Table 1)

Analysis of changes

Tourist arrivals from Sweden increased by 13,1% in August 2018 compared to August 2017 while an increase of 9,1% was recorded for tourists from Greece. Contrary to that, a decrease of 0,9% in tourist arrivals from the United Kingdom, 5,2% decrease from Russia, 20,7% decrease from Israel and 9,4% decrease from Germany were recorded. Percentage changes from one year to the next for the main countries of usual residence of tourists are presented in Table 1.

Main countries

The United Kingdom constitutes the main source of tourism for Cyprus for August 2018, with a proportion of 34,4% while arrivals from Russia comprise 21,2% of total arrivals, from Israel 7,8%  and from Sweden 3,9% (Table 2).

Purpose of visit

For a percentage of 88,3% of tourists, the purpose of their trip in August 2018 was holidays, for 9,7% visit to friends and relatives and for 1,9% business (Table 3).
