Marketing Greece: Athens on Travel Weekly magazine coverInfluential US travel trade magazine Travel Weekly presents an in-depth destination and news feature on Greece

The city of Athens dominates the cover of the influential US travel trade magazine Travel Weekly which presents an in-depth destination and news feature on Greece.

The article is written by Patricia Schultz, the acclaimed best-selling author of "1,000 Places to See Before You Die" who toured Athens, Peloponnese and Patmos island on the Aegean with the support of Marketing Greece and recorded her experiences in a six-page tribute which begins like this:

Good news of record breaking

"The news is good: The 2015 travel season for Greece has broken all records, and tourism, one of the country's few successful industries and the lifeline to its economic recovery, stands to enjoy an equally healthy season in 2016.

Greece's tourism industry, which accounts for 17.3% of the country's gross national product and employs 19.4% of the workforce, is contributing decisively to what could be the first tentative signs of an economic improvement. But no one is ignoring the difficult times ahead.

I arrived in Greece in late September wondering what crisis conditions would await and how they might impact those who, like me, have long enjoyed a love affair with this special corner of the Mediterranean?"

Professionalism and optimism

According to her article, Ms. Schultz quickly realizes that Greece is always ready to welcome guests with professionalism and optimism.

She stresses that Athens air arrivals increased by 25.6 percent in the first nine months of the year and that the country is on course to achieve a record 26 million arrivals and tourism receipts of 14.5 billion euros by the end of the year.

Ideally suited to US travellers

Following her exploration of the city for several days, she accounts the reasons why the Greek capital is ideally suited to US travellers of all ages and underlines the fact that September is an ideal month to visit the city, with temperatures remaining warm.

Over the past three years, Athens has experienced an unprecedented revival in popularity among travelers, among them significant numbers of Americans, who, up until recently, considered the Greek capital a stopover on the way to the islands”, she notes.

She is objective, enthusiastic and living her own adventure, she describes her trip to Athens as an experience full of surprises, from the ancient to the modern, from downtown to the suburbs, from traditional cuisine to modern Greek gastronomy.

Classic charm and fresh new face

Ms. Schultz comments on the continuous development of youth entrepreneurship, characterizes Greek cuisine as “one of the world’s most underrated” and describes her participation in a culinary walking tour “to experience the real deal along the little-visited backstreets of the atmospheric Plaka neighbourhood”.

She refers to the classic Athens spots that a tourist must experience, such as the Acropolis Museum and the Archaeological Museum, but also focuses on the fresh new face of the city which new generation walking tour companies explore through their authentic first-hand experiences.

Unique Patmos atmosphere

Next, the author travels to the first Greek capital, Nafplio, relaxes and enjoys the beauty of Porto Heli and, finally, relishes the unique atmosphere of Patmos island leading her to conclude:

"The timeless story, the beauty and the hospitality of the place is all you will remember this trip. Combined with the unique temperament of Greeks who live their lives to the fullest and are the incarnation of carpe diem, my experience in Greece I will never forget "
