Greek PM on Tilos: Innovative projects for a cyclical economy are of key significanceTilos uses a hybrid system to produce electricity from a wind generator and a photovoltaic (solar panel) park, in addition to storage of electricity surplus in batteries, which helps it meet high demand during the tourist season

The government attaches great importance to innovative projects turning cyclical economy into action, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said while visiting the island of Tilos on Monday.

"I want to congratulate you for this significant initiative, which creates an interesting institutional precedent, but I mainly want to underline the great importance I attach - and the government overall attaches - to innovative works that turn cyclical economy into action," Mitsotakis said.

Off northwest Rhodes, Tilos is the first island in the world to phase out waste. Its program Just Go Zero Tilos garnered it the international certification of Zero Waste Cities, becoming a model in managing waste and protecting the environment.

"You have proven that this is a project and an initiative that was embraced by local society. We are obviously very interested in seeing this project replicated by other islands of this size, proving in fact that 100% recycling - practically phasing out waste heading to landfills - is a target that is absolutely tenable," Mitsotakis said during his visit to the Town Hall.

There he witnessed the signing of an agreement between Tilos Mayor Maria Kamma and South Aegean Regional Governor Giorgos Hatzimarkos with the regional Solid Waste Management Entities to manage the program.

The Greek PM was given a briefing on the projects on the island and toured the Megalo Chorio village and the newly built archaeological museum that will promote the island's rich history, which includes remains of pygmy elephants.
