Anastasiades and Guterres hope Cyprus talks may resume soon
President Nicos Anastasiades said after his meeting on Wednesday in New York with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres that they both share the view that Cyprus negotiations may shortly resume, however, pending the referendum in Turkey, this is not probably the time for those on which progress depends to take the necessary decisions.
Anastasiades expressed satisfaction over the positions outlined during the meeting, noting in his statements to the press, they discussed about substantive pending issues. He added that certain questions and demands being put forward must be addressed so that there can be hope for a settlement of the Cyprus problem.
During the meeting President Anastasiades invited the UN once again to release any data on missing persons in Cyprus. As he noted the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) in Cyprus will visit the UN headquarters in New York in May with a view to achieve further progress in this field.
Asked about the Secretary General’s thoughts concerning the negotiations on the Cyprus problem, Anastasiades noted their common belief that the dialogue between the two communities may soon resume.
He added that at the same time they believe “that pending the referendum in Turkey, this is not probably the time for those on which progress in important issues depends to take the necessary decisions.”
Invited to say if he trusts Ankara and Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, Anastasiades said he has confidence in the positions of the Greek Cypriot side which he conveys.
Asked about Guterres’ position on the Turkish side’s demand for the four European fundamental freedoms to be allocated to Turkish citizens in Cyprus after a settlement, Anastasiades said that one should not expect the Secretary General to express a position on this, however Guterres was clear on the fact that a way must be found to address the concerns of the Greek Cypriots and the EU citizens.
Anastasiades said he did not believe that there is a different approach between Guterres and his Special Adviser on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide, adding that no third party will tell the Greek Cypriots to accept a demand that will endanger their existence or make a compromise on this, adding that Greek Cypriots will decide about any settlement plan as they will vote on it during a referendum.
Meeting with delegation of ExxonMobil
President Anastasiades also said that he will have during his visit at the US a meeting with a delegation of ExxonMobil, noting that on April 5 contracts will be signed so that ExxonMobil will be given license to conduct research for hydrocarbons in Cyprus` Exclusive Economic Zone.
UNSG’s Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq has said that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressed his hope that the talks would resume as soon as possible and that once they resume, both sides would expedite their deliberations, building on the progress they have achieved in the past 22 months, in order to move the process forward in a decisive matter towards a conclusion of a comprehensive settlement.
Responding to a question about the meeting, Haq said that Guterres and Anastasiades discussed the state of play in the negotiations, in particular the latest developments, which have led to the current impasse, adding that the Secretary General noted that the serious efforts that are currently underway to overcome the impasse in their near future.
"He expressed his hope that the talks would resume as soon as possible. He also hoped that, once they resume, both sides would expedite their deliberations, building on the progress they have achieved in the past 22 months, in order to move the process forward in a decisive matter towards a conclusion of a comprehensive settlement," Haq added.
He also noted that the Secretary General reiterated the readiness and commitment of the United Nations to continue supporting and facilitating the Cypriot-owned and leader-led process.
Asked if Guterres will also meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci, Haq replied that "we will inform you with any further meetings on Cyprus whenever those are confirmed."
