Based on provisional data by the Bank of Greece, the balance of travel services showed a surplus of €1,719 million in June 2016, down 3.6% from a surplus of €1,783 million in June 2015. More specifically, travel receipts decreased by 5.4% to €1,851 million in June 2016, from €1,957 million in the same month of 2015. Travel payments fell more sharply, by 23.9% (June 2016: €132 million, June 2015: €174 million). The drop in travel receipts resulted from a 4.0% decline in average expenditure per trip and a 2.0% fall in arrivals. Net receipts from travel services accounted for 79.8% of total net receipts from services and more than offset (122.3%) the goods deficit.
In January-June 2016, the balance of travel services showed a surplus of €2,991 million, down 6.7% from a surplus of €3,205 million in the same period of 2015. This development was due to a decrease of €242 million or 5.8% in travel receipts, as travel payments dropped by €28 million or 2.9%. The decrease in travel receipts resulted from a 1.6% decline in arrivals and a 4.9% fall in average expenditure per trip.
