Experiential History and Culture Workshop Silo Art Factory in Mycenae for all ages
The Experiential History and Culture Workshop Silo Art Factory in Mycenae, is a unique experience primarily for children and students of all levels, but also for adults.
Not only because they will be impressed by the modern "Trojan horse" and the Atlas created by artist Stelios D. Maragos, founder of Silo Art Factory, but also because guests, guided by expert instructors, can be initiated in the art of painting to manufacture ceramic objects. They will use appropriate tools and learn the history of ceramic art and culture that was based on this supple and beautiful material.
This innovative educational program can be attended by primary students of junior high and high school and all those who love creation and art (from three on to 103 years). The programs last for 1 or 1½ hours per group and are carried out daily as well as on weekends, with prior consultation.
Students and visitors are guided to the Greek Art Room and the Antique Room with the traditional furniture and objects and pottery workshop, while in the Silo’s courtyard they will be introduced to the Trojan Horse and informed about its construction and "secrets".
Immediately after, they come into contact with recycled useful objects and the way to use and reuse discarded materials by others.
In the last five years, hundreds of students from all levels of education have visited and watched the Experiential Workshop History and Culture and have thus come in contact with culture and art. Hundreds of schools from Greece and Europe have incorporated visiting Silo Art factory into their programs.
Why visiting Silo Art Factory is a priceless experience
On the way to the New National Highway from Mycenae to Nafplio, an old factory and aviary has been transformed into an art gallery. Therein art lives.
On the way to Nafplio, near Monastiraki area, you will meet the Trojan Horse, the work of local artist Stelios Maragos.
As will Stelios explain himself, the Trojan Horse has two faces, the iron and more rough on one side and the wooden and more earthy and human on the other, as life itself and man today.
Father of a large family, he worked himself as a child in the pottery workshop of his parents. Twelve years ago, he found the old abandoned house and, there, the idea of a space of art and creation, a lifelong dream for him, was born.
As he says himself, he found in the back of the building a huge food transport screw which had rotted over time. A long iron which could serve as a tail for the Trojan horse. Thus, the idea for its construction was born and he started 12 years ago collecting old objects to complete the work.
The Trojan Horse is one of the many exhibits that can be found in SiloArtFactory. Through art, the venue invites the visitor to experience a life philosophy that combines nature and modern lifestyle.
The next exhibit that is worth mentioning is the Atlas. This is a variation of the classic Atlas in which the earth has grown thorns and Atlas is ready to fly. In this way, Stelios manages to convey to young visitors who visit each year the critical situation facing our world today due to wars, refugees, climate change and the economic crisis.
Constructed wholly from recyclable materials, it wants to show us the usefulness of old items that, instead of being thrown away, can be recycled in order to make a better world.
Pottery classes for young and for older children are held in the workshop of this multiplex venue so that young children can experience the ancient arts today and understand how ceramic pottery was made in Ancient Greece. This is an ideal school excursion solution in conjunction with the archaeological site of Mycenae located nearby.
Stelios manages for five consecutive years to offer to dozens of schools across Greece and Europe an experiential workshop in history and culture, in a beautifully landscaped area of 40 acres, between golden green olives and fragrant orange trees.
The program is headed by Ms. Georgia Dinou while the entire operation of the "Silo" multiplex is overseen by Stelios D. Maragos.
